A Healthy Environment

Posted by: currentaffairstv
Plenty of people want a change in the way our environment is treated, but for many it is only in words and action. They go on living the same non eco-friendly way they always have. But luckily there are some who are going the distance for the benefit of all.
Julia “Butterfly” Hill has been an active environmentalist since 1996 after being involved in an automobile accident. She is well known for having lived for nearly two years in the branches a redwood tree to keep it from being cut down.
Former American vice-president Al Gore has been an important figure at environmental functions and is an active environmentalist, addressing problems such as global warming and has authored a book titled An Inconvenient Truth.
Image By: openDemocracyThe late Steve Irwin drew attention to the more difficult to love animals and created an understanding of them and encouraged conservation of the habitat and animals.
Some quotes that are note-worthy are from environmentalists and great thinkers alike.
Mother Theresa said, “There must be a reason why some people can afford to live well. They must have worked for it. I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things we could use.”
“The weight of our civilisation has become so great it now ranks as a global force and a significant wild card in the human future along with the Ice Ages and other vicissitudes of a volatile and changeable planetary system.” Dianne Dumanoski Rethinking Environmentalism
“The Truly Healthy environment is not merely safe but stimulating.” William H. Stewart Environmental Science and Technology
“When the well's dry, we know the worth of water.” Benjamin Franklin Poor Richard's Almanac
“To be whole. To be complete. Wildness reminds us what it means to be human, what we are connected to rather than what we are separate from.” Terry Tempest Williams (addressing the senate in 1995)

Carter: The Bold Spirit

Posted by: currentaffairstv
Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of USA (1977 to 1981) is a rarity amongst international politicians. He might have not been a star president but as a human being his commitment to humanity has been unflinching and his achievements extraordinary.
Carter is a citizen of the world in the truest sense, one who has consciousImage By: Cliff1066ly stayed away from capitalizing on his political career and instead focused on channelizing his resources towards humanitarian causes. The Carter Centre set up by him and his wife, Rosalynn in his hometown of Plains, Georgia in 1980 serves as his office from where the couple works to support causes from defending human rights to eradication of diseases like river blindness and Guinea worm.
As a part of Nelson Mandela's Elders, a group of selfless elder statesmen, he travels to the troubled areas throughout the world to negotiate peace and avoid conflicts and bloodshed. He offers his services not because of any political considerations but because of deep respect for human lives.
Carter's anchors in life have been his strong Baptist faith and his marriage to Rosalynn which has stood the tests of time for over six decades. His post presidential activism has inspired many including Bill Clinton who considers Carter to be his role model.
A peanut farmer, engineer, naval officer, Ex President, humanitarian activist and a Nobel Peace Prize winner Carter has essayed many roles in his life. Even his critics can't help but praise his energy and spirit he devotes to the causes that he supports.

Politics Behind Great Britain

Posted by: currentaffairstv
Britain's political system is shaped by the history of the country. That explains why it is unique. Britain hasn't been invaded in over 1000 years now and there was no Civil war like the US or a Revolution like the one in France. The only difference has been how the monarchy exercised its powers in the past and how it is doing it in the present.
Britain does not have a written constitution, the political system isn't entirely democratic and any change is a gradual process often requiring consensus. The struggle, if any, has been to shift power from the all powerful monarch to the people's representatives in the Parliament.
Key dates in Britain's Parliamentary history are 1215 when King John signed the Magna Carta. Britain's first model Parliament was summoned in 1295 by King Edward I. The two house Parliament concept first emerged in 1341 and has served as a model for most parliaments throughout the world.
Another key difference in Britain's political history is the division of power amongst the three regions i.e. Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. England, which comprises of about 84% of the population of Great Britain, does not have a strong sense of regionalism! So, unlike the United States of America, there is no need for a Federal system.
Finally, Great Britain has been a member of the European Union since 1973. There are certain restrictions on the 27 member states of the European Union, in terms of policy making. The European Commission, elected by member states serves as the guiding light for all policy decisions.

Lately it has been reported that the official website of Syria was hacked by an online activists. It was very alarming for Syrian government about the issue of Arab uprising which trigger the activists online to hack the Syria's official website because of discontentment on the censorship, dictatorship and various anomalies of their President Bashar al-Assad. Activists groups of RevoluSec and Anonymous are doing a way for several activities to overthrow their president on his power. They have the common goals to make a healthy dialogue and educate the public about the rummage and human abuses by their leader. The reason they conducted the hacking operation is to bring into the consciousness of the people that they have the right for freedom from oppression. Several other websites owned by the cities of Syria such as Homs, Latakia, Deir Ezzor, Aleppo, Palymyra and Damascus are also hacked and it was replaced by an interactive map of Syria presenting the complete data of those killed people because of the Syrian government crackdown after protests started last March and killed 2, 316 people based on the death toll.
The protesters claim that they will never stop ceasing the government to end the leadership of President Assad especially to give justice for the people who out in the roads of these different cities were all chanting not the humiliation but death.
The killings of thousands of activists and protesters done by the troops loyal to Assad was recorded by the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva since March 15th 2011 which cost the lives of more than 2,700 people. More and more Asyrians are getting into protests that will only stop when Assad is gone on his position as Syria President. Now, many are hoping that Assad will finally step down on his Excellency as president of Syria in order to avoid more conflicts and killings will finally stop.
For good of Syria, Assad should step down before an armed conflict starts in the country. People have been frustrated with the regime and they have been using all the possible means to lodge their protest against the dictator. There is a dire need to bring peace and tranquility in the country.
On the other hand, Minnesota Day Care providers join the unionising together with other 15 other states according to the American Federation of State, Country and Municipal Employees and the Service Employees International Union to express their sentiments and clamor to the government.

Human Rights in China

Posted by: currentaffairstv
The Chinese state media announce nationwide on a proposed amendment in the Criminal Procedure Law for the legalization letting the police to detain the persons for up to 6 months without trial or due legal process and hold them incommunicado which would be a secret detention. Many Chinese legal scholars, Chinese lawyers, human rights leaders and activists strongly oppose with the proposal and they warn the Chinese government that it is a cynical fig of justification legally to implement the enforced disappearances of the people living in China who violate either local or universal law. It was but emphasized by the Chinese government that such proposition is merely an extension of the existing residential surveillances for those who are suspected threatening the state security, have major corruption cases and potential to create terrorism. This proposition is called “soft arrest” which the persons have no contact to their relatives or families, not even to their legal counsel for a period of six months living with the homes of the police.
It is very alarming that the number of victims of China's deteriorating Law towards the protection of Human Rights has increased for the past 8 months. Many security forces of China government have forcibly arrest and disappeared with at least twenty six writers, bloggers, human right defenders, acivists and artists based on the big information from nongovernmental organization. These abducted people are returned to their homes but there are still unknown three. They are Zhang Haiboa, a blogger who lives in Shanghai and was abducted Feb. 20, Tan Tanhua who was abucted last Feb.25 while on his home in Guangzhou City and Lan Ruoyu, a missing student since Feb.17 living in Chongqing.
The worst side of the scenario showed that victims were abducted against their will and forced to be with the Chinese police for unclear reasons. They were denied of their basic human rights, no legal process was observed, are detach from their love ones as there was neither contact nor communicating their lawyers. Most of them were traumatized and have spent long time in unbearable silence and seclusion which are all against the Human Rights. Teng Biao, a human rights lawyer who has experience this before can tell that indeed all of these are true.
This is a clear intimidation of the human rights of every person. Liu Shihui who is a human right lawyer also was grabbed on his home in Guangzhou on February 25 and was detained for 108 days, then on June 12, he was released but prior on that he was deprived of sleep, got more abusive threats and many interrogations which had all affects his body and mind causing him to be ill until now.
Ironically, enforced disappearances have been common in China even if it wasn't legalized. In fact, each year in Beijing many petitioners were abducted, imprisoned and abused in secret underground illegal detention equipment's of China police but nobody get justice when they become the victim of it. There must be a way to save millions of people there who can be the victim of this great human right violation. The world must compel the China Government on its illegal act.

Liberals vs. Conservatives

Posted by: currentaffairstv
It's one of the oldest stories of the 20th and 21st centuries: Liberals and Conservatives really, really don't like each other. Most people in the liberal news media wouldn't hesitate to call all conservatives any variety of names – usually names that carry connotations of archaic sentiment and antiquated opinions. Likewise, those who carry the torch of conservatism never pass up a chance to malign the opposing side, labelling them as socialists and other terms that are suggestive of anarchy and the like. Then there are the inbetweeners, those who claim that both sides can agree if only they were to look at what they have in common. And, indeed, both sides do have a lot in common. But they'll never agree, at least not while the current concepts on both sides last.
When we look at the two sides – take the Labour and Conservative Parties in the UK as an example - in more depth, we find that, at least initially, they have the same overarching goal. Both want to “keep their nation great”. This apparent similarity can, unfortunately, be deceptive. Although this goal appears to be shared, the philosophies that both sides attempt to implement when given power are poles apart. The Liberal – sometimes called the Progressive – side usually takes the view that greatness come through social reform and “freedom” for all involved. The Conservative side takes the opposing view that advocates the conservation of traditions and old social institutions, and at the most only gradual social reform.
That is why it is most unlikely that the two sides will ever fully agree. Their ideologies are oriented in fundamentally opposed directions, and no side seems to have the desire to compromise the values that would be required for a meeting of the minds. And the news agencies don't seem to help that much in that respect. They represent, depending on the leanings of the network or newspaper, the world as being polarized and completely black-and-white towards their side. All this ever foments is a spirit of distrust and hurt feelings.

The Seventh Man

Posted by: currentaffairstv
Another person has been arrested as a claimed part of the terrorist group working toward a deadly project in Birmingham. The seventh man, Majahid Mussain, age 20, was accused of being an essential contributor to the campaign that was being prepared. He, along with Rahin Ahmed, age 25, and Ashik Ali, age 21, are all part of what was said to be the financial backing part of the team. Many claims have been found in free press and online news in regard to opinions of exactly why the charges were filed and whether they were entirely truthful.
All of the six others that garnered headlines were between ages 25 and 32, and are currently awaiting trial in early October. Online news sites have said their piece and given a view on exactly whether they believe this was a means to violate their democratic rights or really was as claimed an act of terrorism that was prevented. Some of the exact accusations held against the other six are “being concerned in constructing”, a home-made explosive device to be used in an act of terrorism, specifically a suicide bomber.
The arrests made were carried out by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit. Each of the arrests was well planned and executed without the use of force and arms. Links continue to surface as to others connected to this ring in search of preventing much more acts of violence that could ensue. Special attention has been paid to the finance part of the terrorist groups as it is believed that cutting off this ring of active funders would be a great solution. Though this act was supposed, in many ways, to be a violation of these individuals' liberal rights, much good has been done by preventing this attack and digging deeper into its sources.

Debates over Guantanamo

Posted by: currentaffairstv
The Guantanamo Bay detention facility – located in a rather odd coincidence in the north of Cuba – is a US-run military detention camp. It is subdivided into three different internments camps: Camp Delta, Camp Iguana and Camp X-Ray. The latter one was closed in 2002, and all the detainees were sent over to Camp Delta for continued internment. Though an order was signed by US President Barack Obama to the effect of closing down the facility, the continued existence of the facility raises ethical and moral dilemmas over the treatment of the detainees.
One of the main complaints regarding the internment facility is the military rules under which it operates. With the rather ostentatious touting of “freedom of speech” that occurs in the US news media, there exists a plethora of opinions and viewpoints. The liberal and liberally-inclined media tend to point out the many human rights violations that can exist when there are no civilian observers to report on the quality of military rule. People of a more conservative bent usually give the retort that such a camp is necessary when - to use a favourite phrase of theirs - “We are defending our freedom from terrorism,” or something of the like.
There are, of course, more complex details pertaining to the issue. The human rights violations are not however, simply an invention of the liberal news media, as some people might like to believe. The treatment of the prisoners – especially, since the events of September 11th 2001, and specifically prisoners of the Islamic variety – has been deemed by the press as nothing short of horrendous. There have allegedly been instances of prisoner abuse by their guards, as well as sanctioned “interrogation” by the higher authorities there. Perhaps the most disturbing detail of all the discussions on Guantanamo Bay is that the detention can be indefinite – that is, the detention has no expiration date whatsoever.

Life Expectancy- All Time High

Posted by: currentaffairstv
A new set of statistics reviewed, points to the fact that life expectancy in the UK is higher than it has ever been. Humans have lived longer and better lives due to medicine and improved health care in the UK, and the numbers are looking better all the time said the online news for the Office for National Statistics. The news is that the amount of people that have reached 100 has moved from 2,500 where it was in 1980 to 12,640 in 2010, a five-fold increase. This statistic proves that medication and health care have upped their ante and moved forward tremendously.
According to news channel sites, some of the contributing factors to such an increase in centenarians is the high survival rate of patients between 80 and 100 who have gone through any form of trauma, be it strokes, heart attacks, or any other catastrophes.
Current projections put the number of people to reach 100 at 160,000 in 30 years or less, a statistic seen as being full of prome and hope, given by democratic news sites. In the beginning of this current century the life expectancy for anyone over 100 was nine times as high for men as it was for women, but now things have evened with the advancement of medical technology. The score is now almost even and both have equal chances of living to an old age.
Centenarians have not been the only ones with a life expectancy increase, but also super-centenarians, those with an age of 110 or more, has increased phenomenally said the UK online news commissioner. As the 1920s were some of the most productive times for childbearing ever had in our world, the next coming the years promise to have a greater increase in these centenarians and super-centenarians everywhere. The medical professions increase in talent and ability has greatly improved the chances of a longer life but will it necessarily be a better life?

2011 Market Turmoil

Posted by: currentaffairstv
With the onset of 2011 a gradual downslide in many areas of world economy has become increasingly apparent. The assets available and the level of global liquidity have been on a slow but steady mudslide. Many facts have been speculated as to the whys and wherefores, and here we'll present simply a few of the main contributing factors compiled by international experts.
This simple financial update kicks off with the clear idea that the main contributing factor to the world decline in commerce is the slowing growth in the United States and in Europe. This factor along with debt slowly being built by each of these nations has been bringing the world down as the US and Europe are two of the largest and most powerful world regions.
The International Monetary Fund has given an outright warning against quickly thought-out trading of all forms as the have clearly stated that we have entered a “dangerous new phase” as they put it. This phase, experts say, is characterized by low growth and high debt on a nationwide level.
A lack in leadership is another reason the financially intelligent have begun to worry. Leaders of countries in past times were in place to make a marginal difference in how a country's debt level affected the country. In our present era this is not the case, on the contrary, presidents continue to sink the country into further debt as though it were national policy. Countries like the US that sink millions into areas that should only be taken up as a luxury must be mindful not to set an international precedent in this case.
Many other signs such as vulnerability in banks and financial information being passed more freely daily set the world in a more gloomy setting. And though some have managed to buck against this, financial news everywhere tells us that this is going to be a rough year.
